How to Host a Kids Flower Giveaway

I recently collaborated with one of my long-time friends and Girl Scout troop leader, Jessie Gardner, to host a flower giveaway event for her Troop. I had the best time talking with the girls about flower gardening, showing them how to make bouquets, and then helping them give the flowers out to people in the park. There was very little prep work and everyone had a great time.

Recommended Supplies:

  • Flowers! We asked each Girl Scout to bring one flower bouquet. We also brought about 5 extra bouquets to supplement the others.

  • Rubber bands to tie the flower bouquets together

  • Ribbons to tie around the rubber bands to give each bouquet a little extra pizzaz

  • Scissors and/or gardening clippers

  • A bucket with water

  • Tags that say something along the lines of “I hope these flowers make you smile!” to attach to the ribbon of each bouquet (Optional)

  • A “Free Flowers” hand-written sign (Optional)

  • A tablecloth (Optional)

Here are a few of my tips and tricks to make it a fun-filled day:

  • Bring more rubber bands and ribbon than you think you’ll need. We ran out of ribbon pretty quickly.

  • When someone arrives with a bouquet of flowers, remove the wrapping and rubber bands from the bouquet and set them in the middle of the table. This way when the time comes, everyone can mix and match from each other's flowers and make unique bouquets.

  • Once everyone arrives, get them together to talk about what you’re doing and show them a few demonstration bouquets so they can see what the bouquets should look like. How many stems should go in each bouquet? What length should the stems be? How should they tie them? We went with 5-7 stems per bouquet.

  • If the kids are young, help them cut the flowers or cut them yourself.

  • Have a bucket or two filled with water where the kids can put their bouquets when they finish making one so that the flowers don’t wilt from being out of water for too long.

  • Once everyone has finished making bouquets, have them take one or two and go together to find people to give them to. At our giveaway, we delivered flowers to people sitting on benches, playing basketball, and hanging out at a nearby playground. I like asking people if they’d like flowers for themselves or to give to someone they love.

  • BONUS: Bring extra small arrangements or bouquets and set them aside. Give those away to each of the kids as a party favor. This was the hit of the party when we did it!

Have fun and let me know how it goes!
